GO AHEAD FOR NEW SCHOOL
Monmouthshire County Council announced that the scheme for replacing the old school buildings at Caldicot Comprehensive School was under way. Plans for the new school would shortly be made available for the public to see. Simon Kneafsey, architect and programme manager for MCC’s 21st Century School programme, said the new school would be a catalyst for the regeneration of Caldicot.

WALES STAR WEDS AT CALDICOT CASTLE
Wales and Arsenal footballer Aron Ramsay married his childhood sweetheart Colleen Rowlands at Caldicot Castle. Guests included Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott.  Ramsey requested that instead of buying wedding presents, donations should be made to Parkinson’s UK charity.

SUPERMARKET TAKES SHAPE
Work began on the building of the Asda supermarket on the former playing field at Caldicot Comprehensive School.  The store is due to open in November.

BUS SERVICE SAVED
The bus service to Newport and Chepstow, which was due to be withdrawn in July, was saved. Stagecoach had given notice of the withdrawal of the service but following negotiations with Monmouthshire County Council it was taken over, with some alterations, by Newport Bus.

TOWN TEAM DIRECTORS IN PLACE
Directors to the newly formed Caldicot Town Team were elected at a meeting in the town.  The new body drew criticism for its “flawed” consultation process.  A further meeting was due to be held in July.

SCHOOL LEADERS WIN PRAISE
The South East Wales Education Achievement Service praised the leadership of Caldicot Comprehensive School in its annual report to Monmouthshire County Council. At the same time it identified Castle Park and Dewstow schools as being in need of “further help”.

WELSH AWARD FOR CALDICOT PUPIL
Caldicot School sixth-former Jennifer Haley won the Welsh Learner of the year Award at the Urdd Eisteddfod at Bala. Jennifer, the only Welsh speaker in her family, impressed the judges with her written literature and her recorded conversation.

HOUSE PRICE WATCH
The cheapest property advertised in the local press for sale in Caldicot at the end of June 2014 was, as in May, a one-bedroom ‘cluster house’ in Grove Gardens at £79,950. The most expensive was a four-bedroom detached property in Clos Ystwyth at £284,950.
