JOHNSTON ELECTED COMMISSIONER
Independent candidate Ian Johnston was elected the first Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent. He received 23,531 first preference votes against 23,087 for his nearest rival, Labour’s Hamish Sandison. Following the inclusion of second preference votes he received 29,748 votes against 24,636 for Sandison. The turnout was only 15%. At the Sandy Lane polling station, only 4% of eligible voters arrived to cast their votes. Johnston served with Gwent Police for 33 years, rising from constable to chief superintendent. From 1994 until 1999 he was head of Gwent CID.

TATA SAYS TA-TA TO CALDICOT
Indian steel giant Tata Steel announced that the service centre on Caldicot’s Severn Bridge Trading Estate would close early in 2013 with the loss of 55 jobs. The closure announcement was part of a larger package of cuts that would see 265 jobs going in Gwent, including the closing of service centres at Llanwern. However, Tata also announced that 120 jobs would be created with the re-opening of the hot strip mill at Llanwern.

NEW SCHOOL OFFICIALLY OPENED
The new Dewstow Primary School, described by Monmouthshire County Council as ‘probably the UK’s most advanced school’, was officially opened. Parents and members of the community were able to inspect facilities at the school including 72 inch video walls, video conferencing facilities and TV recording studios.

SPRINKLER SYSTEMS LEFT UNCONNECTED
It was revealed that the sprinkler system installed as a fire precaution at the recently opened learning plaza at Castle Park School had not been connected on grounds of cost.

CATERING CRISIS RETURNS TO CASTLE
Seven months after taking over the contract for the tea room, weddings and medieval banquets at Caldicot Castle, Crown Hotels and Restaurants announced that it was withdrawing. The company cited the ‘challenging economic climate’ for its decision. Monmouthshire County Council announced that pre-booked wedding and banquet commitments would be met.

MORE PARKING FOR RAIL PASSENGERS
Monmouthshire County Council announced that the car park at Rogiet playing fields would be extended to create 106 additional parking spaces for passengers at Severn Tunnel Junction.

A TASTY PERFORMANCE
Caldicot Comprehensive School pupil Marcus Vine won the regional heat of the Rotary Young Chef competition.

LAW AND ORDER
A catering van was destroyed after being set on fire at Severn Bridge Trading Estate.

Richard Fielding of Caldicot was jailed for two years after being found guilty of attacking a man and stealing his wallet at The Good Measure pub.

Lee Griffiths of Caldicot was given a suspended prison sentence after being found guilty of fraud by false representation. Although unemployed, he had claimed to be a mobile hairdresser in order to secure a loan of £21,000 from Black Horse Finance so that he could buy a car.

HOUSE PRICE WATCH
The cheapest house advertised in the local press for sale in Caldicot at the end of November 2012 was a two-bedroom property in Stafford Road at £109,950. The most expensive was a recently constructed four-bedroom property in Clos Llynffi at £258,500.

CRIME WATCH 
The online “crime map” published by the Home Office showed that in October 2012 there were 49 reported incidents of crime and anti-social behaviour in Caldicot. (Note that from September 2011 new categories have been added, giving more details of offences formerly listed under ‘Other Crimes’.)
