WHAT ASDA BE ASDA BE –SUPERMARKET DECISION AT LAST
Monmouthshire County Council finally announced that its preferred bidder for a supermarket on land at Caldicot Comprehensive School is Asda. Opinion in the town remained divided over whether the opening of the supermarket would be beneficial or detrimental to the town’s regeneration. County Councillor Bob Greenland promised that the money would go towards “the major rebuild” of Caldicot School.

ELECTION RESULTS
Labour came close to sweeping the board in Caldicot in the county council elections.  Four of the five seats were won by Labour. Three were held sitting councillors, while in Castle ward, Labour’s Pauline Watt’s unseated Plaid’s Ron Stewart. In West End, Labour came to within 20 votes of unseating Independent councillor John Marshall.

Caldicot town council is now made up of 13 Labour members and four Plaid Cymru members. The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats did not put up any candidates.  (In 2008 Labour won 9 seats, Plaid five seats and Independents three seats).

COASTAL PATH OPEN
 The Wales Coast Path, which runs through Caldicot, officially opened on 5 May.

CALDICOT BAND IN OLYMPIC CONCERT
Caldicot-based folk fusion band Rusty Shackle played in the concert to welcome the Olympic torch to the Welsh capital at Cooper’s Field Cardiff  on 25 May.

HOUSE PRICE WATCH
The cheapest property advertised in the local press for sale in Caldicot at the end of May 2012 was a two-bedroom first floor flat in Oakley Way at £74,950. The cheapest house was a two-bedroom end-terrace in Denny View at £79,950. The most expensive was Dewstow Lodge, at £349,950.

CRIME WATCH
The online “crime map” published by the Home Office showed that in April 2012 there were 89 reported incidents of crime and anti-social behaviour in Caldicot.  (www.police.uk).
