ASDA BID FOR SUPERMARKET SITE
Supermarket company ASDA, part of the giant American-owned Walmart group, confirmed that it was amongst the bidders for land on the site of Caldicot Comprehensive School. An announcement on the results of the bidding process was due from Monmouthshire County Council in the near future.

CASTLE BANQUETS TO RETURN
It was announced that the medieval banquets that had been held at Caldicot castle since the 1960s would return after the catering contract for the castle had been awarded to Crown Hotels and Restaurants. The company, which runs the Crown at Whitebrook, will also run the tea rooms. The banquets had stopped when the company that ran them went into administration in September 2009. (See March 2008, September 2009.)

COMMUNITY AID CENTRE WINS BACKING
Caldicot town council gave its support to a proposal for the establishment of a community aid centre. The centre, proposed by local churches, would give advice to people with problems relating to issues such as debt, drugs or domestic abuse.

JUBILEE BEACON TO BE LIT
It was announced that a beacon would be lit on the battlements of Caldicot castle on 4 June to celebrate the Queen’s jubilee. A 1950s style fete was to be held in the castle grounds.

DRUNK YOUTH CRASHES CAR
A 17 year old Caldicot youth was banned from driving for 18 months and referred to the youth offending panel for six months after taking his mother’s car after drinking seven bottles of lager, driving it without a valid license, then crashing it.

HOUSE PRICE WATCH
The cheapest property advertised in the local press for sale in Caldicot at the end of April 2012 was, as in February and March, a one-bedroom mid-terrace house in Alianore Road at £104,950. The most expensive was a four bedroom detached house in Heol Teifi at £229,950.

CRIME WATCH
The online “crime map” published by the Home Office showed that in March 2012 there were 72 reported incidents of crime and anti-social behaviour in Caldicot.  (www.police.uk).
