MAN ACCUSED OF ATTEMPTED MURDER
Michael John Ball of Sandy Lane appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of his wife.  The charge follows an incident at a house in Sandy Lane that left Mrs Ball with serious stab wounds.  He was remanded in custody until August 11th.

FLOODING PROBLEMS CONTINUE
Within weeks of the completion of a new sewage system costing £1.2 million, a flash flood hit parts of Castle Lea and Chepstow Road.  Residents had hoped that the work would put an end to the frequent flooding problems in the area and expressed their concerns in a meeting with Welsh Water.

FOOTPATH CLOSURE REJECTED
A proposal by Monmouthshire county Council to close part of a footpath which goes through the grounds of Castle Park School were rejected by a planning inspector.  The inspector ruled that although footpaths through school grounds could be closed if there is evidence that their existence led to violence or the threat of violence or harassment to staff or pupils, such evidence had not been provided.

SHOE SHOP TO CLOSE
Shoezone announced that its shop in Caldicot town centre would close after Christmas. The announcement heightened fears that other shops would be forced to close because the number of shoppers coming to the town centre was falling.

CAFE PLAN OPPOSED
600 people signed a petition opposing the opening of a new cafe in the town centre.  Protesters argued that there were already too many food outlets in the town and that alternative businesses were needed to attract more people into the town centre and assist with the process of regeneration.
