BODY FOUND
The body of Joel Andrews from Caldicot, was found by a walker in woodland close to Fernwerthy Reservoir in Devon, near where he went missing. He had been missing for six weeks. Police announced that they were not treating the death as suspicious. An event organised by family and friends in celebration of Joel’s life raised £800  for Dartmoor Search and Rescue, Alert Me social networking site and Global Rescue Services.

DEATH OF TOWN COUNCILLOR
Christina Ashwin, aged 65, a Caldicot town councillor, passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Mrs Ashwin was the wife of former mayor David Ashwin and acted as mayoress during his year in office. Colleagues on the council paid tribute to her quiet work behind the scenes, particularly on issues of social housing and drugs.

NEW GROUP TO ADVISE ON CASTLE
Caldicot Castle and Country Park Advisory Group held its first meeting. The group was set up by Monmouthshire County Council to advise and assist in the development of the castle and country park.  It included representatives from the town and county councils and local community groups.

SCHOOL CELBRATES ANNIVERSARY
Caldicot’s Welsh medium school, Ysgol Gymraeg Y Ffin completed its tenth year. The school was opened in 2011 in the old village school at Sudbrook before moving to Sandy Lane Caldicot in 2008.

MAJOR WATER WORKS ANNOUNCED
Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water announced major works from Dewstow Golf Club to the B4245 and then along Newport Road, to Chepstow Road. Phase 1, from Dewstow Golf Club down to the B4245, was due to commence in October for a period of approximately 12 weeks, depending on weather and ground conditions. Phase 2, from the junction of Dewstow Road along the B4245 to Newport Road, then to Chepstow Rd, was due to commence sometime after the Christmas holidays (not to disturb the Christmas trade) in January 2012, for  a period of approximately 12 weeks. Whilst traffic lights would be in operation for majority of the duration, they would be manually operated between the hours of 07:30 until 09:30 and 15:00 until 18:30. The works would be a variation of pipe insertion, pipe bursting and open cut. The total cost of both schemes was estimated at approximately £2 million.
 
HOUSE PRICE WATCH
The cheapest house advertised in the local press for sale in Caldicot at the end of July 2011 was a two-bedroom end link house in Estuary View at £109,950. The most expensive was a four-bedroom dormer bungalow in Dewstow Close at  £254,950.

CRIME WATCH
The online “crime map” published by the Home Office showed that in June 2011 there were 55 reported incidents in Caldicot.  (www.police.uk)
