LOCAL HOMES POLLUTE NEDERN BROOK
An investigation by Environment Agency Wales revealed that drainage from houses in the immediate area was responsible for pollution of the Nedern Brook over the last five years, leading it to becoming a “blight on the local environment”. Paul Molloy, who headed the investigation team, reported that the drains of many of the houses on the surrounding estates were incorrectly connected to water drains rather than foul sewers. He urged local resident to check how their waste pipes were connected.

TOWN COUNCIL AWARDS
Caldicot Town Council held its annual awards ceremony. The citizens’ award went to Mrs Pauline Edwards of Caemawr Grove who, having been the victim of frequent vandalism and arson attacks, worked with local police to devise a scheme to cut anti-social behaviour in the area. The prize for the best kept garden went to Pauline Shute of Osprey Drive while the best allotment was judged to be Colin Powell’s at Plot 18, Sandy Lane. The new “Mayor’s Choice” prize was awarded to Keith Collet. The best kept business premises prize went to Julia Smith of Rose Cottage Guest House.

CHRISTMAS EVENT IN DANGER
Fears were expressed that staffing problems would prevent the organisation if the traditional Christmas event at Caldicot Castle. Councillor Ron Stewart told a meeting of Monmouthshire County Council that the situation was “a shambles”. The council agreed that the catering company at the castle should be approached to put on an event.

YOUNG MUSICIANS STORM CASTLE
Caldicot folk band One String Loose topped the bill at Caerphilly Castle’s sound and light show Illuminata 2010.

CHURCH ROOF APPEAL
St Mary’s Church Caldicot launched an appeal to help pay the £40,000 that was being spent on treating roof beams to protect them against woodworm and deathwatch beetle.

HOUSE PRICE WATCH
The cheapest house advertised in the local press for sale in Caldicot at the end of October 2010 was, as in September, a one bedroom mid-link property in Stafford Road at £104,950. The most expensive was, “a detached property in a large plot” (location not given) at £299,950.
